Strength and Failure Properties of Preflawed Granite under Coupled Biaxial Loading and Unloading Conditions

Abstract In this study, numerical simulations of uniaxial compression, biaxial and unloading were performed on granite specimens that contained different prefabricated defects. The microscopic parameters in models verified by the compression experiments intact standard cylindrical specimen square with influences from stress paths, shapes defects, numbers distribution defects strength, deformation, crack initiation characteristics rock investigated. Furthermore, initial cracking stage distributions, cumulative amounts, ultimate failure modes, propagation fractal dimensions under conditions analyzed compared. experiment was divided into three stages to analyze evolution mechanisms. results show most cracks appeared after peak shapes, number relative defect positions significantly affected initiation, propagation, coalescence.
